Ivano-Frankivsk
Ivano-Frankivsk is a regional capital in western Ukraine, a university city at the foot of the Carpathians. It works well for a few days in town, or as a stop on the way to the mountains, for example to Bukovel.
The city in brief
The city began in the 17th century as a fortress. For a long time it was known as Stanisławów (Stanislau; Ukrainian: Stanyslaviv), and since 1962 it has carried the name of the writer Ivan Franko. The historic centre has architecture from the Austrian and Austro-Hungarian periods.
